BaT Auction: 31-Years-Owned 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 at No Reserve

This 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is said to have been sold new from Towne Ford of Redwood City, California and acquired by the seller’s late father in March 1990. The car is finished in Light Pewter Metallic over tan vinyl and power comes from a 351ci Cleveland V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Additional equipment includes 14″ steel wheels with hubcaps, power-assisted steering and front disc brakes, a full-length center console, Sport Deck fold-down rear seats, and an Alpine stereo. This Mach 1 fastback is now offered at no reserve with a Towne Ford license plate frame, manufacturer’s literature, blue California license plates, a repair manual, a car cover, partial service records, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The car was finished from the factory in Light Pewter Metallic (V) and is said to have been repainted approximately 20 years ago. Features include twin hood scoops, Mach 1 graphics on the front fenders, color-matching side mirrors, dual exhaust outlets, and chrome bumpers. The radio antenna has been removed.

Steel 14″ wheels wear polished hubcaps and trim rings and are mounted with 225/70 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The interior features high-back bucket front seats and fold-down Sport Deck rear seats upholstered in Medium Ginger knitted vinyl. Woodgrain trim accents the center stack and door panels and amenities include a full-length center console, lap belts for all occupants, power steering, and an Alpine stereo linked with JBL speakers. The stereo is non-operational, and the seller notes discoloration on the center console lid, the center mirror housing cracked, and states that the headliner has become unattached around the rear window.

The two-spoke steering wheel exhibits cracking and fronts instrumentation that includes a 120-mph speedometer, a fuel gauge, and an analog clock, while additional auxiliary gauges are housed in the center stack. The five-digit odometer has rolled over at least once and currently indicates 3k miles, though total mileage is unknown. Around 52k miles were added by the seller and his father over the last 31 years.

The 351ci Cleveland V8 was factory rated at 240 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque when equipped with the factory two-barrel carburetor. The engine is said to have been rebuilt over two decades ago by San Francisco Engine Remanufacturing, and an oil change was carried out in May 2021.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission and a 2.75:1 rear differential. Additional images of the underside are included in the photo gallery below.
