BaT Auction: ERA Cobra 427 Side-Oiler

This ERA 427 is a Cobra replica and was reportedly commissioned in 1990 as kit #306 from ERA Replica Automobiles of New Britain, Connecticut. The car is finished in dark blue with white stripes, and it is powered by a 427ci side-oiler V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes chrome bumpers, a driver-side roll hoop, dual side-exit exhaust pipes, 15″ Trigo knock-off wheels, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. The car was acquired by the seller in September 2013, reportedly from the son of the original owner, and recent service is said to include installing a Mallory distributor. This ERA Cobra replica shows 13k miles and is now offered with service records, a Cobra-branded tool kit, a car cover, a tonneau cover, and a clean California title in the seller’s name listing the car as a 1966 Ford.

The car is finished in Nightmist Blue Metallic with Wimbledon White stripes, and exterior features include front bumperettes, rear bumpers with overriders, fender vents, dual side-exit exhaust pipes, a Le Mans-style fuel door, and a driver-side roll hoop. Scrapes are visible underneath the nose panel.

The 15″ Trigo wheels have three-ear knock-offs with safety wires and are mounted with 235/60 front and 295/50 rear BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The car features a Salisbury rear axle with twin coil-overs and inboard disc brakes.

The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in black with four-point harnesses as well as a matching dashboard and carpets. Equipment includes a glovebox, map pockets in both doors, AC-branded pedals, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel.

Smiths instrumentation includes a tachometer, a 180-mph speedometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 13k miles, approximately 4k of which were added under current ownership.

The 427ci FE side-oiler V8 was reportedly sourced from a 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 and was installed under previous ownership. Features include a turkey-pan air-filter housing, ported and polished cylinder heads, chromed valve covers, and dual Holley 600-cfm carburetors. Service in November 2020 reportedly included an oil change and installing a Mallory distributor.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Toploader four-speed manual transmission.
