BaT Auction: 1952 MG TD

This 1952 MG TD was refurbished during previous ownership and acquired by the seller in 2018. The car is finished in red over tan leather and is powered by a 1,250cc inline-four paired with a retrofitted five-speed manual transmission. Features include a black soft-top with side curtains, a tan boot and tonneau cover, driving lights, chrome bumpers with overriders, a folding luggage rack, and a “smuggler’s box” built into the floor. This TD is now offered with a custom side curtain case and a clean Tennessee title in the seller’s name.

The car was repainted in red during previous ownership and features a black soft top, tan boot and tonneau cover, driving lamps, side mirrors, chrome bumpers with overriders, and a folding windshield with electric wipers. The spare wheel is mounted under a folding luggage rack. A supplemental top rack holds a custom storage case for the side-curtains and has additional lights for turn signals and brakes. Close-up photos of the case, paintwork, and trim are provided in the gallery.

Silver-finished 15″ steel wheels are fitted with polished hub caps and wrapped in 165/80 Kumho Power Star tires. Independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and four-wheel drum brakes were standard equipment, and a front sway bar as well as a remote master cylinder reservoir were added by the previous owner.

The cabin features tan leather seats along with matching door panels and black carpets and floormats. Amenities include push-button start, three-point seat belts, a glove compartment, storage pockets in the doors, a passenger grab bar, and a dash-mounted rearview mirror. A “smuggler’s box” has been built into the floor behind the seats, and can be used for additional storage.

A Moto-Lita steering wheel frames Auto Meter instrumentation including a 120-mph speedometer, an 8k tachometer, and gauges for oil pressure and coolant temperature. The digital odometer shows 11k miles, approximately 2,500 of which were added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The 1,250cc inline-four is said to have been overhauled during previous ownership, and modifications reportedly include installation of the following:

  • Moss Motors billet crankshaft, rods, and pistons
  • Moss Motors front and rear oil seal conversion
  • 1954 MG TF cylinder head
  • 1954 MG TF SU carburetors
  • Fanelli roller rockers
  • Abingdon Performance camshaft
  • Moss Motors spin-on oil filter adapter
  • Secondary fuel pump
  • Ampco top-end lubricator
  • Bell stainless steel exhaust

The seller states that a Moss Motors Ford T-9 five-speed manual transmission conversion kit was installed by the previous owner. Additional underside photos can be viewed in the gallery below.
