BaT Auction: 1961 Chevrolet Impala Convertible

This 1961 Chevrolet Impala convertible is said to have undergone refurbishment predating the previous owner’s purchase of the car in 2001, and it was acquired by the seller in 2018. The car is finished in white over red vinyl and features a power-operated soft top, power steering, windshield washers, and a push-button AM radio. The 283ci V8 is mated to a two-speed automatic transmission, and service during the past year included rebuilding the carburetor, performing a tune-up, and changing the oil. This Impala is now offered with owner’s and shop manuals, a set of new seatbelts, and transferable New York registration in the seller’s name.

The body was reportedly repainted in its factory white during the refurbishment and features a power-operated black soft top that is believed to have been replaced around the same time. Style elements include rear fender skirts, triple horizontal taillights, chrome bumpers and rocker moldings, and body-side trim with a black fill section. An interior-matching red boot cover is included. Close-up photos of imperfections that include a paint bubble on the right quarter panel above the trim and a chrome blemish on the right corner of the rear bumper are provided in the gallery below.

Steel 14″ wheels are fitted with branded chrome hubcaps and Coker whitewall tires said to have been mounted in 2019. Braking is provided by four-wheel hydraulic drums.

The interior features front and rear bench seats reupholstered in pleated red vinyl with white longitudinal stripes. Bright aluminum inserts on the matching door panels correspond with the dashboard fascia, and the red carpeting is protected by Impala-embroidered floor mats.

A two-tone steering wheel frames a horizontal-sweep 120-mph speedometer sitting above an electric clock flanked by gauges for fuel level and engine temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 74k miles, approximately 1k of which were added during current ownership of three years; true mileage is unknown.

The 283ci V8 underwent servicing in summer 2020 that included rebuilding the carburetor, performing a tune-up, and changing the oil. The seller notes an oil drip that is believed to originate from the pan gasket.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission with a 3.08:1 final gear ratio. Additional photos of the underbody are presented in the gallery.
