BaT Auction: 1973 Datsun 240Z

This 1973 Datsun 240Z is finished in green metallic over a tan and black interior and is powered by a numbers-matching 2.4-liter straight-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Features include an aftermarket exhaust system, electronic ignition, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a push-button radio, and 14″ steel wheels. The seller acquired the car in 2014, and work has since included a repaint, a resurfaced flywheel, brake and suspension work, and a replacement clutch, alternator, radiator, rear main seal, and throttle linkage. This Series 2 240Z is now offered with service records from current ownership, removed parts, and a clean New Jersey title in the seller’s name.

The body was repainted in its current shade of green metallic in 2017 by Sunshine Autobody of Lakewood, New Jersey. The seller notes the bumpers have been rechromed and rust repair was conducted on the floor pans. Additional exterior features include an automatic antenna and a stacked dual-outlet exhaust. Dings are reported in the brightwork.

The 14″ steel wheels wear factory covers and are mounted with 175-width Vredestein Sprint Classic tires that show 2016 date codes. The brake shoes, drums, and cylinders were replaced in 2018, and additional work has included replacing the springs, wheel bearings, front outer tie rods, sway bar links, brake lines, and handbrake components.

The seats have been fitted with replacement tan vinyl covers, and matching upholstery extends to the transmission tunnel and door panels. Amenities include an analog clock, a wood shift knob, a lockable glove box, a push-button AM/FM radio, and black floor mats.  A reproduction center console has been installed, and the removed console and seat covers will accompany the car. Repaired cracks on the dash are noted by the seller.

A faux-wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 7k-rpm redline. The five-digit odometer shows just under 58k miles, approximately 3k of which have been added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The 2.4-liter L24 inline-six is equipped with dual carburetors and was factory rated at 150 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. Modifications include electronic ignition, an electric fuel pump, and an aftermarket exhaust. The alternator was replaced in 2020, and additional work during current ownership has also included replacement of the following components:

  • Radiator and thermostat
  • Throttle linkage
  • Air filter
  • Fuel filter and sending unit
  • Windshield washer tank
  • Spark plugs and ignition wires
  • Hoses, belts, and gaskets

Engine pad stamping 181269 matches the number listed on the body tag shown in the gallery below.

Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The clutch was replaced in 2018, and additional work performed at that time include a resurfaced flywheel along with a replacement rear main seal, clutch cylinders, u-joints, hoses, and seals. Additional photos of the underbody are included in the gallery, along with receipts beginning in 2014.
