BaT Auction: 2002 BMW M5

This 2002 BMW M5 is finished in Titanium Silver Metallic over extended black leather upholstery and powered by a 4.9-liter V8 paired with a six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Equipment includes automatic climate control, cruise control, a moonroof, xenon headlights with washers, Park Distance Control, and heated and power-adjustable front sport seats. The car was first sold by Moritz Cadillac-BMW of Arlington, Texas, and spent time in New Jersey, North Carolina, and Florida prior to the seller’s acquisition and subsequent relocation to Maryland in October 2019. The car now has under 89k miles, and the oil was changed in November 2020. This E39 M5 is now offered with two keys, a Carfax report, and a clean Maryland title in the seller’s name.

The exterior is finished in Titanium Silver Metallic with Shadowline trim and features a rear lip spoiler, a power sunroof, fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, xenon headlights with washers, and quad exhaust outlets. The Carfax report lists damage to the rear of the car from January 2018 and the car was inspected for prior damage in October 2019, with repairs noted on the left, right, front, and rear of the vehicle. The front bumper cover is cracked on the right side, and scratches are noted on the left-rear door and body molding.

Staggered-width 18″ double-spoke wheels wear a mix of Michelin Pilot A/S 3 and A/S 3+ tires that measure 245/40 up front and 275/35 out back. Curb marks and discoloration on the wheels is shown in the gallery.

The heated and power-adjustable front seats are upholstered in black leather, which extends to the dashboard, center console, door trim, and rear seats. Wood trim accents the cabin, and additional amenities include automatic climate control, navigation, cruise control, an anthracite Alcantara headliner, and M5-branded floor mats and door sill inserts. Records indicate the air-conditioning system was recharged in September 2019. The front and rear seats and driver’s door insert show wear, and the passenger-side airbag cover is separating from the dashboard.

The leather-wrapped M-branded steering wheel frames instrumentation including a 185-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer with a variable redline, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level, oil temperature, and coolant temperature. The digital odometer indicates under 89k miles, approximately 4k of which were added by the seller.

The 4.9-liter S62 V8 features double-VANOS variable valve timing and was factory rated at 394 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The oil was most recently changed in November 2020.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. An underside inspection overview performed by a BMW dealership technician in July 2020 can be seen here.

The Carfax report shows the aforementioned 2018 damage and 2019 inspection and lists registration, service, and inspection history in Texas, New Jersey, North Carolina, Florida, and Maryland.
