BaT Auction: 1968 Ford Mustang Coupe 289 3-Speed at No Reserve

This 1968 Ford Mustang coupe is finished in red over red vinyl and powered by a 289ci V8 paired with a three-speed manual transmission. Features include 15″ Magnum 500 wheels, a dual exhaust system, and an aftermarket stereo. The car was acquired by the seller in August 2020, and service since has reportedly included replacement of the clutch and flywheel. This Mustang is offered at no reserve with appraisal documents, service records, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The body was finished from the factory in Candyapple Red (T) and was reportedly repainted under previous ownership. Exterior features include dual side mirrors, chrome trim, an antenna, and twin exhaust outlets. The seller states that the reverse lamps do not work, and paint chips are noted on the hood and the quarter panels.

Chrome-finished 15″ Magnum 500-style wheels wear Mustang-branded center caps and are mounted with BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires. The car is equipped with four-wheel drum brakes.

The cabin features bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in red vinyl, and matching-color carpeting lines the front and rear footwells. An aftermarket Autosound Slidebar AM/FM/USB stereo is mounted in the factory location. The seller notes a hole in the driver’s seat and sun damage on top of both front seats. A headliner tear is present below the passenger-side sun visor.

A wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and alternator charging status. The five-digit odometer shows just over 58k miles, 1k of which were added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown. The seller states that the fuel gauge reads inaccurately.

The 289ci V8 was factory-rated at 195 horsepower and 288 lb-ft of torque. The seller notes an oil leak from the oil pressure sending unit, and a replacement sensor will be included in the sale.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a three-speed manual transmission and a solid rear axle. The clutch, flywheel, and throwout bearing were reportedly replaced in February 2021. The seller notes corrosion on underbody components and in the trunk.
