BaT Auction: 1974 Ford Bronco Explorer

This 1974 Ford Bronco Explorer was delivered new to Jim Short Ford in Birmingham, Alabama, and was reportedly refurbished in 2012. It is finished in red with a white hardtop over black vinyl and is powered by a 302ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, a dual-range transfer case, and a limited-slip rear differential. Equipment includes 15″ alloy wheels, power steering, front bucket seats, a lockable center console, and a Pioneer CD stereo. The truck was acquired by the seller in 2021, and it is now offered with a Deluxe Marti Report and a South Carolina title in the seller’s name.

Originally finished in Midnight Blue Metallic (S), the truck was repainted red under previous ownership, at which time the fenders, floor pans, and driver-side kick panel were replaced. Equipment includes a white hardtop, aftermarket fiberglass fender flares, chrome-finished bumpers, dual side mirrors, a fold-forward windshield, and dual exhaust outlets. The paint on the windshield hinge is chipped, and the seller notes uneven door gaps.

Aftermarket 15″ alloy wheels wear 32×11.5″ Dayton Timberline A/T tires. Equipment includes Warn manually locking front wheel hubs and an auxiliary fuel tank, the latter of which is disconnected.

The cabin features metal surfaces painted in the color of the body along with seats upholstered in replacement black vinyl. The driver’s seat bottom is torn. Equipment includes matching door panels, Bronco-branded aluminum door trim, power steering, a lockable center console with cup holders, and a Pioneer CD stereo. The tub is coated in bedliner, and an Explorer badge is present on the glovebox door.

The tilt-adjustable steering wheel is fitted with an aftermarket cover and frames a 100-mph speedometer with integrated gauges for the alternator, fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 91k miles, 600 of which were added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

The 302ci V8 was reportedly rebuilt under previous ownership and is equipped with a chrome air cleaner and Ford-branded valve covers. An oil change was last performed in April 2021.

Power is sent to the rear or all four wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission, a dual-range transfer case, and a 3.50:1 limited-slip rear differential. Corrosion is noted in the driver’s floor pan.

The Deluxe Marti Report shows initial delivery to Jim Short Ford, fitted equipment, factory colors, and a build date of May 8, 1974.
