BaT Auction: 1990 BMW 325i Coupe 5-Speed

This 1990 BMW 325i coupe is finished in Brilliant Red over a tan interior and is powered by a replacement 2.5-liter inline-six that was built with 10.1:1 JE pistons, a 274-degree camshaft, and long tube headers. Additional equipment includes a five-speed manual transmission, Ground Control coilovers, Bilstein and Koni shocks, sway bars, a UUC short shifter, an M-Tech II steering wheel, and a Kenwood stereo. The car spent time in Illinois, California, and Washington before being acquired by the seller approximately 13 years ago. Now showing 223k miles, this E30 is now offered with factory literature, service records, a clean Carfax, and a clean Oregon title in the seller’s name.

The car is finished in Brilliant Red and features a front spoiler, fog lights, a sunroof, black trim, body-colored side mirrors, and a powered antenna. The front valance, hood, and lower black rocker trim has been repainted, reportedly due to rock chips. The seller notes clear coat peeling on the tops of the C-pillars.

Black-finished aftermarket Minilite-style 16” wheels are mounted with 205/50 Nokian zLine tires. Front and rear sway bars are installed in addition to Koni front shocks, Bilstein rear shocks, and Ground Control coilovers. The seller notes that the suspension bushings have been replaced, and rock chips are evident on the wheels.

The front sport seats and rear bench have been reupholstered in beige with lighter colored microsuede inserts and black piping. Amenities include a Kenwood stereo with a remote, air conditioning, power windows, an onboard computer, and a UUC short shifter with a double shear selector rod.

A leather-wrapped BMW M-Tech II steering wheel fronts a 150-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges displaying readouts for fuel level and coolant temperature. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 223k miles, approximately 34k of which were added by the seller.

The replacement 2.5-liter inline-six was reportedly built with forged H-beam rods, ARP head studs with an MLS head gasket, VAC dual valve springs, stainless-steel retainers, JE 10.1:1 compression pistons, and an aftermarket 274-degree camshaft. The oil pan has an aftermarket baffle welded in, and additional equipment includes Ireland Engineering heavy-duty rocker arms, a Turner Conforti ECU chip, long tube headers, a K&N air filter, a replacement overflow tank, water pump, thermostat housing, and radiator cap, and an oversized aluminum radiator with silicone hoses and an electric fan. Photos of the engine disassembled are shown in the gallery. The seller notes an exhaust leak where the headers meet the mid-pipe.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission, which is said to have been rebuilt. Additional underside images are provided in the gallery.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or damage and lists history in Illinois, California, Washington, and Oregon through its most recent entry in May 2020.
