BaT Auction: 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Westfalia

This 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon is a Westfalia pop-top camper that is finished in Flash Silver Metallic and powered by a replacement 2.2-liter flat-four paired with a three-speed automatic transaxle. The van is equipped with air conditioning, black-finished aftermarket metal bumpers, a Blazecut fire suppression system, 16″ GoWesty alloy wheels, and an Alpine CD stereo. Camping equipment consists of a rear-hinged pop-top roof, a convertible bed, a kitchenette, a folding table, and an ARB retractable awning. The van was acquired in 2019 by the current owner, who has since added around 11k of the 186k indicated miles. A rebuilt engine was installed in 2017, while work carried out in the last two years included a refresh of the fuel system and brakes, replacing the pop-top shocks, and installing new front and rear main seals. This Vanagon Westy is offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with the removed refrigerator and rear jump seat, repair manuals, service records, manufacturer’s literature, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Arizona title in the current owner’s name.

The van is finished in Flash Silver Metallic with a grey pop-top roof and aftermarket black-finished metal bumpers. The retractable ARB awning is equipped with lighting and an enclosed room with fabric side covers, and additional equipment includes a front spoiler, sliding windows, and replacement connections for electrical, potable water, and grey water. The roof was refinished and the weather seals replaced in January 2018, while the washer fluid pump and pop-top lift supports were replaced in November 2020. The backup lights and rear wiper are non-functional and there is a leak in the washer fluid system per the seller. Areas of faded paint are visible on the mirror caps and around the body as shown in the gallery below.

GoWesty 16″ alloy wheels are wrapped in 215/60 Michelin Defender tires showing 2017 production codes, and the van has been fitted with Bilstein shocks. The brake pads, rotors, and front wheel bearings were replaced in April 2020, while the rear wheel bearings were replaced in 2019. The wheel cylinders and lower ball joints were also replaced in 2017.

Aftermarket flat-folding front seats are upholstered in black leather with microsuede inserts and replacement gray carpets line the floors. Amenities include air conditioning, an Alpine CD stereo linked with a subwoofer, an aftermarket center console, and a swiveling passenger seat mount. The seller notes the front heater blower motor is inoperable.

A leather-wrapped two-spoke steering wheel frames a 100-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer. The shifter bezel light bulbs have been replaced and the fuel level gauge was repaired during current ownership. The six-digit mechanical odometer indicates 186k miles, approximately 11k of which were added by the current owner.

The rear compartment features a flip-down television with a DVD player, a skylight, a flat-folding cloth rear bench, a foldaway table, a kitchenette, cabinets, and curtains. The water faucet and sink trap were replaced in July 2019. The refrigerator has been replaced with additional shelving, though the removed unit accompanies the van.

The replacement 2.2-liter flat-four was installed in November 2017 by LaVere’s Volkswagen and Audi Only of Concord, California and is equipped with a GoWesty fuel rail, a replacement exhaust system, an auxiliary battery, and a Blazecut fire suppression system. The fuel system was refreshed and the coolant pipes replaced in 2019, and additional work in the last three years included replacement of the following components:

  • Front and rear main seals
  • Radiator
  • Power steering pump
  • Oxygen sensor
  • Oil pump
  • Idle speed switch
  • Coolant hoses
  • Accessory drive belts
  • Crankcase vent

Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transaxle. The axle boots were replaced in 2019 and the torque converter was replaced in 2015. Additional work over the last few years is outlined on receipts provided in the gallery.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and displays history in South Carolina, West Virginia, Maine, California, and Arizona through its most recent entry in May 2021.
