BaT Auction: 32-Years-Family-Owned 1979 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce at No Reserve

This 1979 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce was purchased by the seller’s uncle in 1989 and refinished in blue over red upholstery prior to the seller’s acquisition in May 2017. Power comes from a fuel-injected 2.0L inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transmission, and additional equipment includes a black soft top, earlier-model bumpers, 14″ Panasport wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, a roll bar, chassis reinforcements, European-specification camshafts, a wide-band oxygen sensor, headlight covers, five-point harnesses, and a JVC stereo. Maintenance in June 2020 included servicing the fuel injection system, adjusting the valves, and replacement of the rear trailing-arm bushings, spark plugs, and ignition wires. This Spider Veloce is offered at no reserve with service records and a clean Maryland title in the seller’s name.

The Pininfarina-designed bodywork is said to have been previously painted green before it was refinished in light blue during previous ownership, and a subsequent repaint in the current dark blue was carried out in 1997. Features include a black soft top, clear headlight covers, earlier-model stainless steel bumpers, a black four-point roll bar, and black side mirrors. The convertible top was reportedly replaced during previous ownership, and the seller notes corrosion in the passenger-side rear wheel opening and rocker panels.

Silver-finished 14″ Panasport wheels feature bright lips and are mounted with 185/70 Michelin Defender tires. Braking is handled by power-assisted four-wheel discs, and the seller states that chassis reinforcements have been added. A June 2020 service included replacing the rear trailing-arm bushings.

The interior was refurbished during previous ownership and features bucket seats trimmed in red with matching door panels and a black dash and carpets. Five-point Pyrotect harnesses have been installed, and an aftermarket JVC CD stereo is located in the center stack. Warpage is noted on the top of the dash and pictured in the gallery below.

A wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Jaeger instrumentation that includes a 140-mph speedometer and an 8k-rpm tachometer. A trio of auxiliary gauges is located in the center of the dash, and an Innovative wide-band fuel mixture gauge has been mounted inside the driver-side air vent. The five-digit odometer shows 47k miles, approximately 5k of which have been added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

The 2.0L twin-cam inline-four features SPICA fuel injection and has reportedly been fitted with European-specification camshafts. The seller states that the engine was rebuilt in 1989, and work in June 2020 included servicing the fuel injection system, adjusting the valves, and replacement of the spark plugs and wires. The seller notes that the engine requires multiple attempts to start while cold.

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox and limited-slip differential.

The car is accompanied by service records from the seller’s ownership.
