BaT Auction: First Production 1981 Ferrari Mondial 8

This 1981 Ferrari Mondial 8, chassis 31075, is the first production Mondial 8 built and is one of 703 examples produced between 1980 and 1982. The car was on Pininfarina’s display stand at the 1981 Geneva Motor Show and was subsequently sold to the Rome, Italy, Ferrari dealer Samocar. It made its way to the US later in 1981 and spent time in California before it was acquired by the current owner in 1990. Power comes from a mid-mounted 2.9-liter V8 paired with a five-speed manual transaxle, and the car is finished in dark red over black leather upholstery. Equipment includes air conditioning, power windows, and a Sony CD player. This Mondial 8 is now offered on dealer consignment in Missouri with tools, factory books, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Illinois title.

The Pininfarina-designed bodywork was refinished in its factory Rosso Amarillis approximately 21 years ago. Features include hood louvers and a front grille finished in silver, pop-up headlights, and a front spoiler. Imperfections in the finish and rubber bumper trim are noted by the selling dealer.

The Cromodora wheels wear yellow prancing horse center caps and are mounted with 240/55VR390 Michelin TRX tires. A matching spare wheel is fitted in the front trunk. The Mondial 8 featured a fully independent suspension with unequal-length wishbones as well as front and rear sway bars. Braking is handled by discs at all four corners. A brake service is said to have been performed in 2018.

The 2+2 cabin previously underwent a color change from beige to black and features leather-trimmed seats along with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Equipment includes air conditioning, power windows, a Sony CD player, and a gated shifter. An air conditioning service was reportedly performed in 2018. The windows are said to operate slowly, and the high-beam headlight switch works intermittently.

The Nardi steering wheel fronts Veglia instrumentation including a 140-mph speedometer, a 10k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The six-digit odometer shows over 67k kilometers (~42k miles), 39k kilometers of which were added under current ownership.

The mid-mounted Tipo F106B 2,926cc V8 features Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and was factory rated at 214 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque.

Body stamping 31075 matches the chassis tag viewable in the gallery.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transaxle. The clutch hydraulics were reportedly serviced in 2018.

The Carfax report shows history in Illinois from May 1990 to January 2020 and lists no accidents or other issues.
