BaT Auction: Original-Owner Euro 1985 BMW M635CSi

This 1985 BMW M635CSi is a European-market example that was ordered new by the current owner and imported from Germany to the United States in June 1985. The car is finished in black over black leather and is powered by a 3.5-liter inline-six paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes BBS wheels, a power sunroof, air conditioning, an M-Tech 1 steering wheel, and power-adjustable comfort seats. This M635CSi shows 164k miles and is now offered on behalf of the owner with manufacturer’s literature, import documentation, service records, a clean Carfax report, and a clean California title.

The car is finished in black and features European-market bumpers, trunk-lid and chin spoilers, fog lamps, and a power sunroof. A trio of dents near the passenger C-pillar and other exterior blemishes can be viewed in the gallery below.

Multi-piece 17″ BBS wheels are mounted with 235/45 Bridgestone Potenza RE050 tires. The M635CSi was factory equipped with a lowered sport suspension and a 26-mm front sway bar.

The cabin is upholstered in black leather with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpeting. The power-adjustable comfort seats were ordered from the factory in place of the standard Recaro sport seats and their original Buffalo leather covers were replaced due to fading. Modifications to the interior include a modern BMW shift knob and an Alpine CD stereo head unit. Cracks on the dashboard and wear on the leather surfaces can be viewed in the gallery. The electric seat motors are sluggish and the engine oil light stays on longer than expected after the car is started.

An M-Tech 1 steering wheel frames instrumentation that includes a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The six-digit odometer shows 164k miles.

The DOHC M88/3 inline-six is equipped with individual throttle bodies and was factory rated at 282 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque. This engine differs from the US-market S38B35 by featuring a single-row timing chain, exhaust headers, and a piston and head combination that results in a higher 10.5:1 compression ratio.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Additional underside photos can be viewed in the gallery.

The car’s import and transportation documentation is included in the sale alongside manufacturer’s literature and service records dating back to 1994. Images of the bond-release letter from the NHTSA dated June 1985 and other paperwork can be viewed in the gallery.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists registration in California dating back to February 1992.
