BaT Auction: 1978 Porsche 911SC Coupe

This 1978 Porsche 911SC coupe is finished in red over brown leather upholstery and is powered by a 3.0-liter flat-six paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Additional equipment includes a sunroof, fog lamps, 16″ Fuchs alloy wheels, air conditioning, and a Sony CD stereo. The car was acquired by the seller in 2017, and subsequent work included an overhaul of the ignition system as well as an engine-out service to replace the clutch, gaskets, seals, and rubber hoses. This 911SC shows 84k miles and is offered with manufacturer’s literature, service records, and a clean Pennsylvania title in the seller’s name.

Porsche introduced the 911SC in 1978, and this example was factory finished in Cashmere Beige (502) before being repainted in its current red under previous ownership. Equipment includes a sunroof, fog lamps, bright window trim, body-color side mirrors, and rear bumperettes. Detail images of paint blemishes can be viewed in the gallery below, and the seller notes rock chips on the front along with color fading.

Staggered-width 16″ Fuchs alloy wheels with black centers and polished rims wear 205/55 front and 225/50 rear Hankook Ventus V2 Concept2 tires. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes and the car rides on front and rear independent suspension.

The cabin features brown leather upholstery with a matching dash pad, door panels, and carpeting. Equipment includes air conditioning, an aftermarket Sony CD stereo, and Blaupunkt speakers. Wear and cracking is present on the front seats, and there are scratches around the ignition switch.

A leather-wrapped steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation that includes a 150-mph speedometer, a tachometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The six-digit odometer shows 84k miles, approximately 3k of which were added under current ownership. The oil temperature gauge is said to have been replaced.

The 3.0-liter flat-six features Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and was factory rated at 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. The engine and transaxle were removed from the car in December 2020 after which the intake hoses were replaced along with the clutch, external engine gaskets, oil return tubes, engine mounts, breather hose, and the auxiliary air valve hose as well as the front and rear main seals. The seller also states the ignition system was overhauled, and service in 2018 included replacement of the oil thermostat, two of the four thermostat lines, as well as the oil-temperature gauge and sending unit.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle that is said to have been refurbished under previous ownership. Additional images of the car’s underside can be viewed in the gallery.

Manufacturer’s literature, service records, and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity are included in the sale.
