BaT Auction: 41-Years-Family-Owned 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL

This 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is a green-over-tan convertible that was purchased by the seller’s father in August 1980, and it has remained in the family since. The car is powered by a fuel-injected 2.8L inline-six paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, and it is equipped with a gray removable Pagoda hardtop. Maintenance performed over the course of 41 years is said to have included an engine replacement, a rebuild of the transmission, and soft top replacement, while more recent work included a repaint of the body and hardtop in 2018. This W113 is now offered with service manuals, tools, an indoor car cover, and a Missouri title in the seller’s name.

The car was stripped and repainted in green in 2018 following hail damage incurred in 2012 according to the seller, who notes the Pagoda hardtop was repainted in gray during the process. Rust noted on the left door and trunk floor, and close-up photos of the paint, trim, and flaws are provided in the gallery. The car is equipped with a replacement soft top that does not fully extend to the windshield.

Steel 14” wheels wear polished wheel covers with body-color accents and are fitted with 195/70 Goodyear Integrity tires dating from 2013. A spare wheel and Avon tire combination is housed in the trunk.

Cabin finishes include tan MB-Tex upholstery covering the seats, along with color-coordinated treatments for the door panels and interior trim. An inoperative Blaupunkt radio is mounted alongside a VDO clock, and the heater controls are missing. The seller notes a cut and fraying on the driver’s seat belt, and further imperfections include wear in the wood trim, staining on the hardtop headliner, and absent rear deck trim.

Factory instrumentation that includes a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer as well as fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure gauges. Over 81k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, approximately 16k of which have been added during the 41 years of ownership by the seller’s family. Total mileage is unknown.

The 2.8-liter inline-six features Bosch mechanical fuel injection and was reportedly replaced in 2013. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission that was rebuilt during current ownership. Additional service performed during current ownership included a rebuild of the fuel pump, and the exhaust system was recently replaced according to the seller.
