BaT Auction: 1952 MG TD/C Mark II for Charity at No Reserve

This 1952 MG TD/C Mk II is finished in red over red leather upholstery, and power is provided by a 1,250cc inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The car reportedly was acquired in Arizona in 1989 by its previous owner, who commissioned a refurbishment in 1990, subsequently shipped the car to Hawaii, and then donated it to The Salvation Army in 2021 before shipping the car to California. Features include 15″ steel wheels, a tan soft top, chrome bumpers, a vinyl-trimmed dash, a glove compartment, and a passenger grab handle. This TD is now offered at no reserve in California by the seller on behalf of The Salvation Army with a tan tonneau cover and a Hawaii title. All proceeds from the sale—including the BaT buyer’s fee—will go to The Salvation Army, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to meeting the needs of humans without discrimination.

The car reportedly underwent a refurbishment in 1990 performed by Barry Briskman of Scottsdale, Arizona, a process that included a repaint in red. Equipment includes a tan soft top, fender-mounted side mirrors, chrome trim and bumpers with overriders, a matching tonneau cover, and a folding windshield. The radiator cap is topped by a surfer ornament.

Silver-finished 15″ steel wheels feature polished hubcaps and are mounted with Kelly Metric Radial tires. The rear-mounted spare wheel and tire are protected by a tan soft cover. The car was equipped with independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and four-wheel drum brakes as standard.

The cabin features seats upholstered in red leather, with matching door panels and black carpeting. Equipment includes a vinyl-trimmed dash, push-button start, a glove compartment, map pockets in the doors, a passenger grab bar, and a dash-mounted rearview mirror.

A banjo-style steering wheel fronts Jaeger and Lucas instrumentation consisting of a 100-mph speedometer, a tachometer with an inset clock, a combination gauge for oil pressure and coolant temperature, and an ammeter. The five-digit odometer shows 21k miles, and true mileage is unknown.

The 1,250cc XPAG inline-four has two SU carburetors and sends power to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The seller notes an oil leak, the source of which is unknown.

The chassis plate is depicted above. Car number TD/C 15289 EXL/NA indicates a left-hand-drive TD Competition model produced for the North American market in April 1952. The car is titled under the engine number rather than the chassis number. A photo in the gallery shows the number 15506 and XPAG TD2 on the engine tag.
