BaT Auction: 1973 Porsche 911T Targa

This 1973 Porsche 911T Targa spent time in Colorado before being refurbished by the seller’s shop beginning in 2015. Work included sheet metal replacement, a repaint in green, an interior refurbishment, and a rebuild of its numbers-matching flat-six that including increasing the displacement to 2.7-liters and fitting Mahle pistons and 911SC camshafts. Equipment includes staggered 15″ Fuchs alloy wheels, Tarett Engineering RSR-style sway bars, aftermarket torsion bars, a Blaupunkt Bremen stereo, Autobahn Interiors black and houndstooth bolstered sports seats, and a Rothsport shifter for the numbers-matching Type 915 five-speed manual transaxle. Service in February 2021 included a valve adjustment and replacement of the oil pressure sending unit. This 911T is offered on dealership consignment with service records, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a clean California title.

The car was stripped and refinished in Lime Green (226) by the selling dealer in 2015, at which time corrosion is said to have been addressed with replacement of the door skins, passenger-side fender, and sections of the floorboards. The car retains US-market bumpers and lighting as well as a stainless steel Targa bar and a black vinyl roof panel, while a 911S-style front valance and bright wheel arch moldings have been added. A single side view mirror is fitted.

Staggered 15″ Fuchs wheels wear Pirelli P6000 tires. Tarett Engineering RSR-style sway bars and aftermarket torsion bars have been installed.

The cabin features Autobahn Interiors bolstered front seats upholstered in black leather with houndstooth inserts as well as black rear seats, carpets, and trim. A Blaupunkt Bremen SQR46 DAB Digital period-style audio system is paired with Audio Engineering and CDT Audio speakers as well as Mosconi amplifier and equalizer. The seat belts and door lock cylinders have been replaced.

The four-spoke steering wheel frames a central tachometer with a 6,300-rpm redline, a 150-mph speedometer, gauges for fuel level, oil level, oil temperature, and oil pressure, and a clock. The five-digit odometer shows 88k miles, 10k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The numbers-matching 2.4L flat-six was overhauled and displacement was increased to 2.7-liters by the selling dealer in October 2019. Mahle pistons, Carillo rods, 911SC camshafts, and a replacement timing chain and rails, main and rod bearings, and gaskets were installed at that time. Additional equipment includes a Pertronix ignition system and an oil cooler. A February 2021 service included a valve adjustment as well as replacement of the oil pressure sending unit.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a numbers-matching Type 915 four-speed manual transaxle said to have been overhauled and fitted with a Stomski Racing coupler and short-shifter.

The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity shows component numbers, optional equipment, and a production completion date in May 1973.
