BaT Auction: 2017 Ferrari 488 Challenge Race Car

This 2017 Ferrari 488 Challenge was campaigned by the selling dealer at nine events in the 2017 and 2019 Ferrari Challenge North America series. The car achieved top-three finishes at Road America and Circuit of the Americas with Todd Morici at the wheel in addition to a fastest lap at the latter. Power is provided by a twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V8 mated to a seven-speed F1 dual-clutch transaxle with an electronic limited-slip differential. Additional features include Side Slip Angle Control with dual manettino adjustment, Challenge-specific aerodynamics, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, 19” Motegi Racing center-lock wheels, a lightweight exhaust system, carbon fiber seats with Sabelt harnesses, and a roll cage. This 488 Challenge has 6k kilometers (~4k miles) and is offered with preparation and service records from Conquest Racing in Indianapolis, Indiana, as well as spare parts and a clean New Jersey title.

The 488 Challenge was introduced in December 2016 before debuting in 2017 as the sixth model to compete in Ferrari’s single-make racing series. This example is finished in red with sponsor logos and Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli number decals.  Aerodynamic details include a front splitter and flicks, triple hood vents with integrated flaps, brake cooling ducts, side skirts, and a carbon fiber rear wing. The selling dealer notes that the car sustained a hit to the right rear in 2019, after which damaged components were replaced with parts from Ferrari as noted in service logs in the gallery. Several nicks, dings, and scuffs are also pictured.

Silver Motegi Racing center-lock wheels wear Pirelli racing tires measuring 275/675-19 up front and 315/705-19 at the rear. Two sets of spare wheels are reportedly included in the sale. Brembo brakes incorporate six-piston calipers up front and four-piston units out back, which are paired with carbon-ceramic discs measuring 398mm and 380mm respectively. Anti-lock braking control can be adjusted via a dash-mounted dial.

The cockpit houses a roll cage and black-upholstered carbon fiber racing seats equipped with red Sabelt six-point harnesses. Additional trim includes black door panels, an Alcantara-lined dash, a carbon-fiber center console, and checker-plate flooring. The car features a rearview camera with a dash-mounted display as well as air conditioning, fire suppression and radio systems, and cool-shirt capability.

A quick-release Sabelt steering wheel hosts carbon-fiber shift paddles, control and communication buttons, and dual manettinos that adjust traction control onset and intensity. The digital display ahead incorporates a tachometer with an 8k-rpm redline, a gear indicator, a speedometer, lap times, and an odometer reading 6k kilometers (~4k miles).

The twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter Tipo F154 V8 is a lightened version of the powerplant used in the contemporary 488 GTB, and on Challenge cars is equipped with specially tuned engine management for factory ratings of 661 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque.

The Challenge model also features a lighter exhaust system than the standard 488 GTB. Power is sent through a short-ratio seven-speed F1 dual-clutch transaxle with Challenge-specific shift strategies and an electronic limited-slip differential.

Highlights of the car’s participation in Challenge Trofeo Pirelli AM races include a third place in at Road America in 2017 in addition to a fastest lap and second place at Circuit of the Americas in 2019. It most recently raced at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July 2019, after which an inspection and service included installation of new rear brake rotors. Additional service records from 2017 and 2019 are pictured below, as are points standings for Todd Morici across nine races.

The Carfax report lists initial sale of the car in 2017 followed by assignment of a New Jersey title in 2018.
