BaT Auction: 331-Powered 1965 Ford Mustang 5-Speed

This 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe is powered by a 331ci stroker V8 paired with a Tremec T5 five-speed manual transmission and Currie True-Trac limited-slip differential and is finished in Wimbledon White over red. The car was purchased by the seller in 2013 from Sierra Classics in Reno, Nevada, and has undergone a refurbishment in 2018, which included engine and driveline replacement and suspension modifications. Equipment consists of Phil Schmidt Engineering TA-1 15″ wheels, front disc brakes, Borgeson quick ratio 14:1 power steering, Open Tracker suspension upgrades, Koni shock absorbers, a Moto Lita steering wheel, AFR aluminum heads, a Powermaster starter, a push-button AM radio, front bucket seats with hook and loop style lap belts, and Rally-Pac style tachometer and oil pressure gauges. This Mustang is offered with service records, modification records and photos, and a California title in the seller’s name.

The car was reportedly refinished in Wimbledon White in the late 1980s. Features include chrome bumpers, drip rails, and window surrounds, dual side mirrors, reverse lamps, and chrome exhaust tips exiting through the rear valence. The seller notes that bodywork was done on the driver-side door and that the paint is bubbling on the door as well as cracking in the door sill. Scratches and removed paint are shown in the gallery.

Phil Schmidt Engineering TA-1 15″ wheels wear Avon CR6ZZ radial tires sized 215/60 up front and 225/60 out back. The suspension has been modified with Open Tracker suspension components and Koni shock absorbers, and braking is provided by front discs and rear drums.  Borgeson quick ratio 14:1 power steering has been added.

The cabin features red vinyl bucket seats and a rear bench seat with a matching dashboard, headliner, sun visors, door panels, and carpeting. A Safecraft fire extinguisher is mounted to the floor behind the driver’s seat.

The three-spoke Moto Lita steering wheel fronts a 120-mph speedometer, Rally-Pac Autometer tachometer and oil pressure gauges, and readouts for fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 18k miles, approximately 4k miles have been added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The 331ci stroker V8 was installed in 2018 and features AFR Renegade aluminum heads, headers, electronic ignition, a Powermaster starter, Cobra script finned valve covers, an Edelbrock water pump, and a Performer RPM intake manifold and carburetor.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Tremec T5 five-speed manual transmission installed in 2018. The 3.50:1 gears and Currie True-Trac limited slip-differential were installed in the Ford 9″ rear end at that time.
