BaT Auction: 1953 Buick Skylark Convertible Project

This 1953 Buick Skylark convertible is finished in blue over blue vinyl upholstery and is equipped with a 322ci Nailhead V8 paired with a three-speed Dynaflow automatic transmission. Features include a white convertible soft top, a Skylark-specific retractable antenna, wire wheels, a heater, power windows, and a Selectronic AM radio. The car is believed to have been sold new from Murray Buick Co. of Escondido, California, and it spent decades in California before being relocated to South Carolina and later Georgia. This Skylark was purchased by the seller in 2021 and is now offered as a non-running project with a copy of its Buick Owner Service Policy, spare parts, a 1959 California registration document, and transferable Georgia registration in the seller’s name.

One of a reported 1,690 Skylark convertible models produced for 1953, this example is said to have been repainted in light blue in the mid-1970s. Equipment includes a white convertible soft top, dual adjustable spotlights, chrome bumpers, door handles, window surrounds, and side spear trim. Rust is noted in the driver-side floor, spare tire well, tail panel, and trunk lid, and spots of corrosion are visible up close in the gallery below.

Simulated knock-off wire wheels are wrapped in mismatched narrow-whitewall tires, and corrosion on the wheels can be viewed in the gallery. The car is equipped with power-assisted drum brakes and power steering.

The cabin features blue vinyl upholstery along with a two-tone dashboard. Equipment includes a Selectronic AM radio, a power-adjustable seat, a glovebox, a heater, power windows, and a Skylark-specific retractable antenna. Removed interior pieces are included in the sale and can be seen in the gallery.

Instrumentation consists of a 120-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 75k miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The 322ci Nailhead V8 was factory-rated at 170 horsepower and 292 lb-ft of torque when paired with the Dynaflow transmission. A Fram cartridge-style air filter is mounted to the radiator core support and connected to the crankcase breather.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed Dynaflow automatic transmission. Corrosion is present on the underbody, and additional underside photos can be seen in the gallery.

The engine number and serial number match the identification numbers noted on the Buick Owner Service Policy document shown in the gallery. The engine number V287227 is listed as the vehicle identification number on the transferable Georgia registration and the included Georgia Conditional title.
