BaT Auction: 1978 Toyota Celica GT Coupe 5-Speed at No Reserve

This 1978 Toyota Celica GT coupe was sold new in California and acquired on BaT in May 2019 by the seller. The car is finished in orange over black vinyl upholstery, and power is provided by a 2.2-liter 20R inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes air conditioning, an AM/FM stereo with auxiliary input, and polished mirror caps. Work during current ownership included converting the air conditioning system to R134A refrigerant, performing an oil change and tune-up, and replacing the dash cover, radio, and pedal covers. This RA42 is now offered at no reserve with a clean New Hampshire title in the seller’s name.

Finished from the factory in Orange (358), the car is believed to have been repainted some time ago. Features include black and silver pinstripes, side moldings, polished mirror caps, pop-out rear windows, and a locking fuel door. The front and rear badges were refinished and the front side marker assemblies were replaced by the seller. A dent in the driver-side fender is shown in the gallery below.

A set of 14″ steel wheels wearing polished trim rings and factory center caps are wrapped in 195/70 Goodyear Integrity tires showing 2009 production codes.

The seating surfaces are upholstered in black vinyl, and the cabin features matching door panels and carpets. The rear armrest panels were reupholstered, and a replacement dashboard, door handle trim, fuse box cover, A/C switch insert, and brake and clutch pedal covers were installed during current ownership. A tear is noted in the driver’s seat bottom, and cracks are present on the driver-side A-pillar trim and dashboard.

Instrumentation includes an 8k-rpm tachometer and a 125-mph speedometer. The five-digit odometer indicates 31k miles, approximately 6k of which were added by the seller, though true mileage is unknown. Wear is present on the leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The 2.2-liter 20R inline-four was factory rated at 90 horsepower and 122 lb-ft of torque in California-market specification. An oil change and ignition tune-up were performed, the belts, fan shroud, and under-cowl panel were replaced, and the air conditioning system was serviced and retrofitted to use R134A refrigerant under current ownership.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a five-speed W50 manual transmission. Additional underside photos are available in the gallery below.
