BaT Auction: 1988 Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV

This 1988 Lamborghini Countach is one of 610 5000 Quattrovalvole models produced between 1985 and 1988 and is said to be one of 170 “1988.5” models fitted with factory side skirts and electronic climate control. It was first registered in Ontario, Canada, and was acquired by the seller in 2016 before being shown at the 2017 Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Kemble, Ontario. The car is finished in white over matching leather upholstery, and power comes from a 5.2-liter quad-cam V12 paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Features include Haltech engine management, scissor doors, front and rear wings, and body-color 15” OZ Racing wheels. This Countach is now offered in Canada with recent records, a Carfax report, and Ontario registration in the name of the seller’s company.

Introduced as a prototype in 1971, the Countach was designed by Bertone’s Marcello Gandini with angular wedge-shaped styling and scissor doors. The car features a tubular steel space frame under aluminum bodywork as well as NACA ducts aft of the doors and air intakes above the rear quarters. The 5000 QV variant utilizes Kevlar front and rear deck lids, and straked brake vents are integrated into the rocker panels of North American-market cars.

This example is finished in white and features a V-shaped rear wing, a removable front wing, side skirts, dual side-view mirrors, and pop-up headlights.

The 15″ body-color OZ Racing wheels feature Lamborghini center caps and are mounted with 225/50 front and 345/35 rear Pirelli P Zero Asimmetrico tires. A black OZ Racing wheel with a Michelin tire is mounted in the front trunk. Braking is handled by discs at all four corners. Paint chips are noted on the wheels.

The cockpit features fixed-back seats trimmed in white leather with a matching lower dash, center console, door panels, and sills. A contrasting black dash pad and carpets are fitted, and features include a gated shifter, power locks, and electronic climate control. Creasing is noted in the seat upholstery, and the Alpine stereo is inoperable.

The leather-wrapped Raid steering wheel frames a 320-km/h speedometer a tachometer with an 7,500-rpm redline, and auxiliary gauges. The six-digit odometer shows 45k kilometers (~28k miles), 500 kilometers of which were added under current ownership.

The Giotto Bizzarrini-designed 5.2-liter V12 features a 60° cylinder bank angle and four valves per cylinder. It was factory rated at 414 horsepower. The factory Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injection system has been removed, and a Haltech Elite 2000 engine management system and 32-lb fuel injectors were installed in 2017. An oil change is recommended by the seller.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission mounted in the middle of the car, ahead of the engine.

The Carfax report shows history in Ontario, Canada, from new. A mileage inconsistency is shown in June 2021, and the seller states that this is the result of a clerical error.
