BaT Auction: Single-Family-Owned 1978 Mercedes-Benz 300CD

This 1978 Mercedes-Benz 300CD was purchased new by the seller’s aunt in California, and it remained in the state through its acquisition by the seller in April 2021. The car is finished in Maple Yellow over brown MB-Tex upholstery and powered by a 3.0-liter diesel inline-five mated with a four-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes air conditioning, 14″ Bundt wheels, power windows, and an aftermarket Blaupunkt cassette stereo. This W123 300CD shows 107k miles and is now offered with manufacturer’s literature, service records, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in Maple Yellow (606G) and accented by black moldings, and equipment includes an automatic antenna and chrome-accented bumpers, mirror caps, and window trim.

The 14″ Bundt wheels are finished in black with silver spokes and polished lips, and are mounted with 195/70 Michelin X Radial tires that show production codes from 2011. A full-size spare wheel and tire is mounted under the trunk floor.

The interior features seating surfaces trimmed in brown MB-Tex upholstery, while burl wood trim accents the dashboard and center console. The air-conditioning system has been converted to R134a refrigerant, and additional amenities include automatic climate control, a locking glove box, brown floor mats, power front and rear windows, and an aftermarket Blaupunkt cassette stereo. Corrosion is visible at the bottom of both doors, multiple buttons in the center stack are worn, and the wood trim surrounding the climate controls is cracked.

The four-spoke steering wheel frames a 115-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and a combination gauge. The six-digit odometer shows just over 107k miles, all of which were added by the seller’s family.

The naturally aspirated 3.0-liter OM617 diesel inline-five was factory rated at 77 horsepower and 115 lb-ft of torque when new. The seller states the oil was most recently changed before their acquisition in April 2021.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. An additional underside photo is provided in the gallery below.
