BaT Auction: 1980 Datsun 280ZX 10th Anniversary 5-Speed at No Reserve

This 1980 Datsun 280ZX is #241 of 3,000 10th Anniversary Special Edition examples produced, and it is finished in two-tone black and red over red upholstery and powered by a 2.8-liter inline-six paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes removable T-top glass roof panels, 14″ alloy wheels, automatic climate control, cruise control, a Hitachi cassette stereo, and power windows and mirrors. The seller acquired the car in May 2013 and subsequently commissioned a repaint, reupholstering of the seats, repair of the fuel tank, and replacement of the exhaust system and fuel pump. This 280ZX shows under 26k miles and is now offered at no reserve in New Jersey with manufacturer’s literature, spare parts, and a clean New York title in the seller’s name.

The seller reports that the body was repainted red and black with white pinstripes during their ownership to address sun fading, cracks, and corrosion. The 10th Anniversary Special Edition package included headlight washers, commemorative decals on the fenders and rear hatch, black window trim, and a T-bar roof with removable glass panels. Additional exterior equipment includes a rear wiper, an automatic antenna, black body moldings, power mirrors, tinted headlight covers, and black bumpers with chrome accents. The windshield cowl is cracked.

Factory 14″ alloy wheels are finished in silver with black accents and are mounted with a mix of 195/70 Primewell PS850 and Finalist Radial 109 tires. The seller states a power steering line, Pitman arm, and tie rod ends were replaced in 2015.

The high-back bucket seats were reupholstered in red during current ownership and are paired with a burgundy dashboard, console, door panels, and carpets. Amenities include automatic climate control, cruise control, power windows, a Hitachi cassette stereo, and red and black Datsun-branded floor mats. Imperfections include adhesive residue on the center of the dashboard, cracks in interior plastics, discoloration on the shift knob, and scratches on the steering column cover.

A plaque mounted ahead of the shifter denotes the car as #241 of 3,000 Tenth Anniversary Special Edition examples produced.

The burgundy two-spoke steering wheel frames an 85-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer, while a digital clock and gauges for oil pressure and battery voltage are mounted to the right of the steering wheel atop the climate controls. The six-digit odometer shows under 26k miles, approximately 2,500 of which were added during current ownership.

The 2.8-liter L28 inline-six produced 135 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of torque when new. The seller states the fuel tank was repaired and the fuel pump replaced in 2014.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The seller states the exhaust system was replaced with factory components during their ownership, and additional underside photos are provided in the gallery below.

Manufacturer’s literature, spare parts, and a Datsun 280ZX cassette tape are included in the sale.
