BaT Auction: 13-Window 1966 Volkswagen Type 2 Deluxe 1.6L

This 1966 Volkswagen Type 2 is a 13-window Microbus Deluxe model finished in two-tone red and beige over gray vinyl and is powered by a 1.6-liter air-cooled flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. The bus was first delivered to Miami, Florida, and was reportedly refurbished around 2001. It was then moved to Texas after the seller’s acquisition in 2020. Subsequent maintenance included replacement dual Kadron carburetors, an alternator conversion, a front disc brake conversion, and the installation of an aftermarket stereo and an air conditioning system. This Typo 2 is now offered with recent service records and a Texas title.

Factory finished in Titian Red with a Beige Gray upper section, the bus is said to have been refinished around 2001. Equipment includes color-matched bumpers with overriders, dual chrome side mirrors, and passenger-side barn doors. Blemishes are shown up-close in the photo gallery.

White-painted 15” steel wheels feature chrome VW-branded hubcaps and wear 205/75 Kumho Touring A/S tires. A CSP brake master cylinder and front disc brakes were fitted in July 2020.

The interior features front bucket seats and two rear benches upholstered in gray vinyl with matching door panels and black rubber floor liners. A period-style aftermarket stereo with Bluetooth connectivity and a Gilmore air conditioner were fitted in 2020.

The two-spoke steering wheel wears a gold Wolfsburg-crest horn button and fronts an 80-mph VDO speedometer and a fuel-level gauge. Cracks are visible on the steering wheel. A VDO/Kienzle analog clock is mounted on the right side of the dash. The five-digit odometer shows 24k miles, approximately 300 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 1.6-liter flat-four was installed under previous ownership and features dual Kadron carburetors that were fitted by Motormania of Austin, Texas in July 2020. An alternator, PerTronix ignition, and electric fuel pump were installed during the same service.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle.
