BaT Auction: 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Y82

This 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was originally delivered to Orson E. Coe Pontiac of Grand Rapids, Michigan and reportedly spent its life in the state before being acquired by the seller in 2012 and subsequently relocated to California. Finished in black over matching velour upholstery, the car is powered by a 400ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission and equipped with the Y82 Special Appearance Package, which included gold “snowflake” wheels and accents as well as T-top roof panels, special trim, and “Screaming Chicken” graphics. Additional equipment includes a Positraction rear end, an Edelbrock carburetor and intake manifold, Comp Cams camshafts, a shaker hood, a Pioneer CD stereo, and cruise control. Recent service consisted of fluid changes and a replacement starter, battery, and hoses. This Y82 Firebird is now offered with a build sheet, a jacket signed by Burt Reynolds, a car cover, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

Finished from the factory in Starlight Black (19), the car was reportedly repainted during prior ownership and features gold pinstriping, headlight coves, and “Screaming Chicken” graphics on the shaker hood. The seller states that the driver’s door is difficult to fully close and the driver-side removable roof panel has an imperfect fit. Photos showing finish flaws are included in the gallery.

Gold-accented 15″ cast-aluminum wheels came as part of the Y82 package and are mounted with 275/60 Hoosier Radial GT tires. Braking is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. The brake fluid was recently changed per the seller.

The seats are trimmed in black velour, and the cabin features a matching dash, carpets, and door panels. An aftermarket Pioneer CD stereo is stationed in the glove box while a push-button AM/FM radio is retained in the center stack. Additional features include cruise control and Firebird-branded floor mats. The power windows are said to be sluggish.

A leather-wrapped steering wheel with gold accents fronts a matching turned-metal instrument panel housing a 100-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 62k miles, approximately 1k of which have been added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The 400ci V8 has reportedly been fitted with an Edelbrock carburetor, an Edelbrock intake manifold, and Comp Cams camshafts. Service performed in preparation for the sale included fluid changes along with a replacement starter, battery, hoses, seals, and gaskets.

Power is directed to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission and a Positraction rear end. Additional photos of the underbody are viewable in the gallery.

The build sheet shows factory colors and equipment including the Positraction rear axle (G80), the Y82 Special Appearance Package, and power disc brakes (JL2).
