BaT Auction: Modified 1940 Ford Deluxe Sedan

This 1940 Ford Deluxe sedan was purchased in California by its current owner in 1998, and the car subsequently was modified with a repaint in red with yellow flames extending from the nose, a reworked interior with white upholstery and red piping, and a Chevrolet 283ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Other equipment includes a Mustang II front end, a Ford 8″ rear axle, 15″ wheels, whitewall tires, rear-hinged rear doors, and an aftermarket radio. Approximately 5k miles have been added since completion of the build. This modified Ford Deluxe 01A is now offered on dealership consignment with a clean California title.

The steel bodywork has been refinished in metallic red with yellow flames that extend from the nose down the louvered hood and sides. The paintwork and exterior trim are shown up close in the photo gallery below.

Red-finished 15″ steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps and beauty rings, and they are mounted with Remington whitewall tires. The suspension has been modified with a Ford Mustang II front end, and the selling dealer states that the brakes, master cylinder, and shocks were replaced within the past 500 miles.

The car is equipped with rear-hinged rear doors, which open to expose a white interior with red piping on the bench seats, doors, and trim panels. A cassette radio with an auxiliary input is located in the center of the dashboard, and the selling dealer notes stains in the white carpeting.

An aftermarket steering wheel frames instrumentation that includes a horizontal 100-mph speedometer flanked by auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 5,100 miles, which is said to reflect the distance traveled by the current owner.

The trunk compartment has been redone to match the interior.

The Chevrolet 283ci V8 utilizes triple carburetors, an aftermarket camshaft, custom-built headers, and MSD ignition. Recent work is said to have included installing a serpentine-belt system, new pulleys, and a replacement battery as well as changing the oil.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a three-speed TH350 automatic transmission and a Ford 8″ rear axle. Additional photos of the underside are presented in the gallery.

The seller is unable to locate the chassis number on the vehicle itself, but the VIN on the title—185822939—is consistent with that of a 1940 Ford Deluxe 01A.
